Ledger-book Kimono
[work in progress: finalising PDF pattern]
Kimono made from recycled ledger paper. This rare piece is a full kimono made from recycled paper found in a daifuku-cho (accounting book). The kimono consists of a single layer and was likely worn to provide warmth or collect sweat beneath an outer kimono. Made from recycled accounting books, fragments of text such as “quote” and “revised” can still be seen on its surface. It shows some signs of staining, and there may be evidence of repair work. The garment is both hand-sewn and glued, suggesting careful assembly, and over time, it has likely developed natural wrinkles without the typical momigami (kneaded paper) treatment, as it was likely made never to be seen. This piece offers a glimpse into the resourceful techniques employed in its creation.
